Ensure Housing Rights and Care for Homeless Individuals in California

The Issue

As a resident of California, I witness the plight of homeless individuals on our streets every day. They are either begging for food, money or battling drug addiction. It's disheartening to see fellow humans struggling for basic needs - a roof over their heads. Yet, it's even more frustrating that our city leaders seem to turn a blind eye towards this pressing issue despite promises of resolution.

In California alone, there are approximately 151,000 homeless people as per the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homeless Assessment Report (2019). This is not just an alarming statistic; it is a call to action.

But also there's people who suffer from mental illnesses according to Ethan Ward of LAist where he says “LAHSA’s 2019 count estimated that 25% of people experiencing homelessness here have a serious mental illness. But after examining LAHSA's numbers for mental illness, an L.A. Times analysis found that it affected 51% of people living on the streets.” (Ward, 2021)

We need policies that ensure housing rights for these individuals and provide them with necessary care if they have fallen into the trap of substance abuse. We can no longer afford to ignore this crisis in our backyard. The state government must work towards providing affordable housing options and effective rehabilitation programs.

This petition calls upon lawmakers in California to take immediate action by implementing laws that protect the housing rights of homeless individuals and provide them with adequate care facilities if they have been victims of drug abuse. not only that, we have to reduce the cost to build houses for the homeless because they're too expensive to build at least a one-room studio per unit.

The time has come for us all to stand up against homelessness in our state. Sign this petition today because everyone deserves a home and everyone deserves care!
