Ensure Hazard Pay for Essential Workers During Red Alert Days

The Issue

I am an essential worker. Just like my countless co-workers and peers around the nation, I have assumed the responsibility to keep our community functioning, no matter the condition. From bright sunny days to stormy weather, we are there. However, when Red Alert days are in effect, the risk involved significantly increases.

Red Alert days suggest severe weather events that could potentially lead to loss of life or extremely severe property damage. Essential workers, in such circumstances, bear the uncalled-for burden of risking their lives for the sake of their duties. It's a burden that weighs heavily, one that isn't recognized sufficiently.

In recognition of the increased risk during Red Alert days, we call on our employers and legislatures to ensure the provision of hazard pay for all essential workers having to operate in these dangerous conditions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 3.4 cases of injuries and illnesses per 100 full-time employees were reported in 2018-2019 among the U.S. private industry. The spectrum of these cases includes severe weather conditions, amongst other hazards. However, a sizable portion of the workforce, including us, the essential workers, is yet to receive adequate compensation commensurate with the high-risk nature of our jobs on Red Alert days.

Our request is simple and just. Recognize the risks we take and reward our continued service appropriately, especially during Red Alert days. Please join us in this struggle for hazard pay during such extreme conditions. Sign our petition. Let your voice amplify our cause for fair compensation.
