Ensure guaranteed supply and diverse MHT/HRT options in Australia

Ensure guaranteed supply and diverse MHT/HRT options in Australia
The issue
In Australia, many women are facing significant challenges in accessing Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) / Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) medications.
Limited product options and unpredictable supply mean countless women are left scrambling to find the hormones they need to maintain their quality of life. Many of us are forced to spend hours contacting multiple pharmacies or making repeated visits to General Practitioners (GPs) for alternative scripts, travelling long distances just to secure necessary medications. This is particularly challenging for women in remote communities.
It is crucial for women to have reliable access to a diverse range of MHT/HRT options as not every product is tolerated by all ppl.
Transdermal Estradiol is the safest delivery method…yet we only have 4 products available. 2 brands of patches & 2 types of gel.
Patches are not suitable for hot & humid climates in much of Australia.
Not all Patches stick on everyone.
Not everyone absorbs all products
Many have skin reactions to the adhesive & some have allergic reactions to the gels.
We need more body identical transdermal options.
We need a variety of products with different delivery mechanisms, eg Estradot & its equivalent in quality, size & doses. Sprays & rings are also available on the global market yet not in Australia.
Hormonal medications are essential for managing menopausal symptoms, which can significantly impact physical and emotional well-being. The stress of uncertainty in accessing these medications exacerbates the very symptoms they are intended to alleviate.
Peri/Menopause affects up to 7 millions Australian women, and for many, MHT/HRT is a vital component of maintaining a balanced and healthy life.
The lack of consistent availability is an undue burden that should not be placed upon those who rely on these treatments.
This issue does not just affect women who go thru menopause naturally, but also after surgical and chemical menopause which can happen at any age.
We are calling on the Australian Government, Federal Department of Health and pharmaceutical companies to work collaboratively to ensure a guaranteed supply of MHT/HRT medications and to expand the range of products available in Australia. This includes making sure that all globally available options are accessible to Australian consumers, providing a more comprehensive suite of products tailored to diverse health needs.
Join us in urging policymakers and stakeholders to make immediate changes that promote a dependable supply chain and enhance the variety of hormone therapy options available. Let’s work together towards a healthcare system that supports every woman's right to the medications she needs.
Please sign this petition to advocate for change and ensure no woman in Australia has to compromise her health or quality of life due to medication shortages.
