The Issue

I am a patient suffering from the rare disease Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis, which requires ongoing, specialized medical attention. My personal experience highlights a critical gap in our current healthcare system: the communication and action channel between hospital consultants and General Practitioners (GPs). After my Rheumatologist sent two letters to my GP surgery advising the urgent commencement of iron supplements due to my severe anemia, the advice was inexplicably ignored. As a result, my condition worsened, and during a pre-surgery anesthetic appointment for a nasal septal button replacement, it was discovered I needed an iron infusion. This could have been avoided if the initial recommendations were followed.

This is not just about my story; this gap in communication could affect any patient needing specialized care, potentially leading to severe health risks and unnecessary complications. It's time for the NHS to implement stricter protocols ensuring GPs consistently follow up on recommendations provided by specialist consultants. Reports from hospitals are not mere suggestions; they are critical instructions that could significantly impact a patient's health outcome if not adhered to.

An effective solution would be integrating all communications from specialists to GPs within the NHS App. This would ensure that patients have full visibility of their medical correspondence and can actively participate in their care plans. The app should include every letter, report, and recommendation sent from hospitals to GPs, enabling patients to track their case progress and hold their GPs accountable for any missed actions or ignored advice.

Furthermore, if a GP decides not to follow a consultant's recommendation, there should be a formal requirement to document their reasoning within the patient's record. Transparency is essential, and understanding the decision-making process can provide peace of mind and allow for informed patient discussions.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the enhancement of our healthcare communication systems to protect all patients, particularly those with complex health conditions. Together, we can push for a more efficient, transparent, and patient-centered approach within the NHS. Demand that GPs act on specialized advice essential for patient care. Let's make sure that stories like mine become exceptions, not the rule. Sign the petition to ensure proactive healthcare informed by specialist recommendations.
