Ensure freedom for Hindu cultural markers in Indian institutions

Ensure freedom for Hindu cultural markers in Indian institutions
The Issue
As a proud Hindu, I have always worn my cultural and religious identity with pride. Yet, in recent times, an unsettling trend has threatened the freedom to express these truly cherished aspects of our heritage through cultural markers like bindis, tilaks, sindoor, and kalawa. We are witnessing an increasing number of implicit or explicit bans on these symbols in numerous settings across India, ranging from workplaces to academic institutions.
Our cultural markers are more than mere adornments to us—they symbolize our beliefs, traditions, and pride in our heritage. No individual should be subjected to discrimination or feel ashamed due to cultural or religious expressions of identity. It is disheartening to realize that in a nation as diverse as India, there are establishments that are still failing to embrace the spirit of inclusivity that our Constitution upholds.
Numerous laws such as the Indian Constitution’s Article 25 provide the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate religion—etched in our foundational legal framework. Therefore, enforcing bans on Hindu cultural markers strikes against the very grain of these rights. Enabling environments where all individuals can embrace their faith openly without discrimination or fear is a shared responsibility of all institutions.
Concrete actions are urgently needed to ensure Indian workplaces, educational institutions, and recreational spaces foster an environment of inclusivity. These include revising internal policies to explicitly allow cultural expressions such as wearing bindis, tilaks, sindoor, and kalawa. Further, diversity training programs must be instituted to educate individuals on religious freedom, ensuring respect and understanding across all cultural practices.
By signing this petition, you are voicing your support for unblocking discrimination and embracing diversity in its true sense. Let us stand together to ensure a future where no Hindu ever feels compelled to hide their identity. Together, we can create a more welcoming and inclusive India for everyone. Please sign this petition and help us take a step towards necessary change.
