The Issue

My name is Sarah, and I'm a dedicated professional who, like many women, has taken on part-time work to balance motherhood and a career. With passion and commitment, I juggle the demands of my job alongside the responsibilities of caring for my children. It's a reality faced by countless women across the UK, who make a choice daily to contribute both at home and in the workforce.

But there's a glaring issue: when companies offer redundancy pay based solely on part-time wages, it feels like an unfair penalty against women who have adapted their work schedules due to childcare. Many of us accepted part-time roles not out of choice, but necessity, to fit the crucial caregiving role we perform at home. This reduction in pay during redundancy doesn't just affect us temporarily, it compounds the difficulty of providing for our families.

Statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) highlight how women are disproportionately represented in part-time work because of childcare commitments. Despite providing equal, if not greater, value in our time at work, the system financially penalises us for this choice when redundancies occur. This policy is not just financially damaging, but it perpetuates gender-based economic inequality.

The Gender Equality Index highlights that the gender pay gap is a persistent issue, and the treatment of part-time wages as less valuable in redundancy scenarios only exacerbates it. Women are not less valuable because we work fewer hours; our dedication and professionalism remain steadfast. Many women are expected to continue delivering full time work on a part time basis, with no numerical compensation.

I propose a legislative change that ensures redundancy pay for part-time workers, specifically mothers, particularly, but not limited to, those who have previously worked full time for the company, is calculated based on their full-time salary equivalent. By doing so, we recognise the sacrifices made by mothers and move towards a fairer economic environment.

Sign this petition to urge policymakers to address this inequity and ensure that companies provide redundancy pay that reflects the full value of part-time mothers' work. Together, we can push for a more just and equal society for current and future generations of working mothers. Please join me in making this change a reality.
