Ensure Equality and Safety for Black American Citizens

The Issue

As a Black American woman who serves this country, I experience a dread that none should bear. It is unfortunate, that while off-duty, or at any moment, my life could be tragically cut short due to a hate crime. The pertinent question becomes: where is the protection for our citizens if black people are not safe? I am part of these proud and productive communities who significantly contribute to our economy as tax-paying citizens. Our differing identities and experiences meld beautifully to form the racially diverse nation we call home. Yet, our experiences are marked by fear stemming from hate crimes - deplorable actions that have no place in the ‘land of the free’.

Black minorities are often targeted, but we are American citizens who, like everyone else, deserve to live without fear of persecution and murder because of our skin color. The consequences of not addressing these social inequities have moral and societal impacts. Neglect risks fragmenting our unity and may well plunge us into unprecedented social chaos in the long run.

Instances of positive action, like the recently implemented “Stop Asian Hate” campaign, show us that the legislative system possesses the power and influence to address and denounce hate crimes. It's time to extend this protection. It has been proven time and again that black lives are disproportionately endangered. It is time to take a stand. It is time for us to say 'Enough is enough.' True justice, peace, and equality can be achieved, and it starts with acknowledging our shared responsibility as American citizens.

Join us in urging the government to ensure equal rights and protection against hate crimes for all American citizens, regardless of their ethnic, racial, or cultural background. Sign the petition today.
