Ensure equal pay for nurses in GP surgeries
The Issue
I'm a practice nurse and I did not receive a pay rise last year, and only a 1% increase this year, despite a pay raise being agreed for NHS staff nationwide. After all the hard work and dedication, it feels disheartening and unfair. Many of us have devoted our careers to providing the best possible care to our patients, yet we are not receiving the fair and equitable treatment we deserve from General Practitioner (GP) surgeries.
Currently, nurses working in GP surgeries often find themselves in a disadvantaged position compared to their counterparts employed directly by the NHS. GP practices are not mandated to offer NHS pay rises or benefits such as sick pay and maternity, paternity or adoption pay. This disparity creates a two-tier system which undermines the value and importance of our work in the community.
The lack of parity in pay and conditions not only affects nurses on a personal level—causing financial instability and stress—but it also impacts the quality of care we provide. Nurses struggling with financial worries or inadequate benefits are often unable to fully focus on the essential care their patients need, which can lead to burnout and a detrimental effect on their well-being.
Equal pay and conditions would acknowledge and support the significant role that practice nurses play within the healthcare system. By ensuring that all NHS-related pay rises, including specified benefits, are extended to nurses employed in GP surgeries, we can create a more unified and equitable working environment. Such changes would motivate and empower nurses to continue their invaluable work without the worry of unequal treatment hanging over their heads.
We call upon policymakers and healthcare leaders to address this issue urgently. Let's ensure all nurses receive the recognition and equitable treatment they deserve for their dedication and the crucial work they perform every day. Please sign this petition to support equal pay for nurses in GP surgeries and help bring about an essential change in the healthcare system.
