Ensure Equal Compensation for Additional Assistance During Inclement Weather and Paid Holidays

The Issue

I speak from personal experience as an Additional Assistant, grappling with the responsibility of looking after a family whilst managing the hefty responsibilities of my profession. We, the Additional Assistants, undertake tasks and responsibilities that are comparable, if not more challenging, than those of teachers and Instructional Assistants. Yet, it seems our efforts go unnoticed as we continue to receive lower and unequal financial compensation. Making matters worse, during inclement weather or paid holidays, there are no provisions for us. This lack of fair compensation greatly impacts our financial well-being, and the potential to support those who depend on us.

This is more than a plea for justice; it is about the collective welfare of hardworking members of the Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) who play essential roles in maintaining the quality and smooth running of our education system. A decent standard of living should not be a luxury but a basic right that every BCPS employee, including Additional Assistants, is entitled to.

The lack of parity in compensation for BCPS employees during inclement weather periods and paid holidays results in significant financial loss. If the current system remains unaddressed, the financial loss faced by Additional Assistants will continue to mount, making it nearly impossible for them to support themselves and their families.

As signatories to this petition, we urge the stakeholders of BCPS to take immediate steps to ensure that Additional Assistants receive equal pay and benefits. This includes fair compensation during inclement weather periods and paid holidays, and recognition of their considerable contribution to our education system. The economic vitality of Additional Assistants and their families hangs in the balance.

Please sign this petition and join us in advocating for a fair and equitable workplace for all BCPS employees. Your signature can make all the difference.
