Ensure Equal Access to Performance Spaces for All Greek Organizations at Coastal Carolina University

Ensure Equal Access to Performance Spaces for All Greek Organizations at Coastal Carolina University
The Issue
This matter is deeply personal to me. My sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., was recently denied usage of a particular space in the Edwards building, a venue we have consistently used for years for our Membership Intake. This incident had added to discussions and revelations within our community, bringing to light struggles not just of our sorority, but other Greek organizations as well when it comes to booking and securing performance spaces.
Coastal Carolina University prides itself on its rich and diverse Greek Life system. Unfortunately, the current situation doesn't reflect this diversity and is hindering the growth and essence of these organizations. For years now, multiple organizations have experienced difficulties in scheduling spaces, notably those within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) organizations. This inadvertent bias creates an uneven playing field for students desiring to express themselves and grow in their organizations within a shared campus space.
Higher education professionals have the power to create a fairer, more equitable booking system that respects and promotes all Greek organizations equally, especially NPHC organizations. The campus performance spaces must be open and accessible to all groups when booked appropriately, fostering inclusivity while promoting cultural diversity on campus.
We urge those in charge to reflect on the values that Coastal Carolina University stands for and address this discrepancy. Let us all stand together to ensure Coastal Carolina University embraces its rich and diverse Greek Life, allowing all organizations to prosper. Please sign this petition to amplify our appeal and uphold the principles of equality and inclusivity on our campus.
