Ensure Educational Equity For Students With Invisible Disabilities
The Issue
I have witnessed firsthand how difficult it can be for students with invisible disabilities to receive the support they need. Anxiety, learning differences, ADHD, autism, and other disabilities that aren't immediately visible can often be misunderstood. Rather than getting the help they deserve, these students are frequently mislabeled as unmotivated or disruptive, leading to inequitable treatment in our education system. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to educational equity and parent advocacy.
Across New York State, too many students with invisible disabilities are not identified early enough or provided with the support they need to reach their full potential. Education should be a right, not a privilege, and every child deserves the opportunity to succeed regardless of how they learn.
Research has shown that early identification and intervention can significantly improve academic outcomes, graduation rates, and long-term success for students with disabilities. Yet too many educators and school districts lack the training, resources, and support needed to recognize invisible disabilities early and provide appropriate accommodations.
We are calling on the New York State Education Department to:
- Increase educator training on invisible disabilities and mental health.
- Strengthen early identification and intervention efforts across New York schools.
- Expand access to evidence-based accommodations and student support services.
- Encourage stronger partnerships between schools, families, and community organizations.
- Ensure greater accountability so students with invisible disabilities receive equitable educational opportunities.
Every child deserves to be seen, understood, and supported. By signing this petition, you are helping create a more inclusive education system where students are recognized for their strengths, receive the support they need, and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Please sign this petition and help ensure that students with invisible disabilities across New York State are no longer overlooked.
