Ensure Continuous Student Access to Mobile Phones in Reavis High School

The Issue

As parents of students attending Reavis High School in Burbank, IL, we continually worry for the safety of our children. Our children's lives are too often at risk in an environment meant for learning and growth. Fearfully, school is no longer the safe haven it once was. With school shootings becoming increasingly commonplace nationwide, the necessity for the immediate means of communication becomes unarguably paramount.

Right now, students' phones are taken away and locked up until the end of class in Reavis High School, making it difficult for them to promptly reach out for help or inform us during a potential crisis. The simple act of giving students continuous access to their phones not only allows for improved safety protocols but also instills a layer of comfort knowing they can communicate when necessary.

According to a 2019 report by the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, there were 116 school shooting incidents in the U.S – an alarming number that underlines the importance of continuous communication access for students. If maintained with the right rules and respect for education, we believe this can support safety without jeopardizing the teaching-learning environment.

We ask the school administration and district officials of Reavis High School to reconsider their phone policy for the safety and peace of mind of our children and families. Please sign this petition to protect our children and allow them continuous access to their mobile phones during school hours.
