The Issue
On a tragic day six years ago, my family was shattered when my sister, Josephine Jimenez, was brutally murdered. Josephine was only 16 years old, a young girl full of life, dreams, and a bright future. She was coerced and blackmailed into leaving the safety of her home by Cody Slayton, a 19-year-old who then heartlessly took her life. Josephine wasn’t the only victim; under Slayton's predatory grasp, other women suffered as well.
This unimaginable loss has left a void in our hearts that can never be filled. Josephine was more than just a sister; she was a daughter, a friend, a cousin, and a cherished member of our family. The grief we endure is unimaginable, and the light Josephine brought into our lives has been tragically extinguished. Her absence is felt every day and our family's reality is now permanently altered.
Currently, Cody Slayton could be eligible for parole in just 10 short years. This thought is unacceptable. Allowing him an opportunity for release would not only bring further pain to our family but also pose a potential threat to our community. Justice for Josephine and protection for others demand that Slayton remains behind bars for the rest of his life.
In 2017, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that only 48% of murder cases resulted in life sentences, reflecting a justice system that sometimes fails victims and their families. It is crucial to appeal to the court and parole board to consider the severity and brutality of Josephine’s murder and ensure that Slayton does not have the chance to harm another person.
