Ensure Bribie Island ambulance operates 24/7
The issue
Last weekend, we experienced a situation that highlighted a potential life-saving service gap on Bribie Island. We required urgent medical attention for a patron at work, and though we are located directly across the street from the Ambulance Centre in Bongaree, the ambulance was unattended. As a result, the nearest available emergency vehicle had to come from off the island, leading to a delay of over twenty minutes. While I won’t disclose specific details out of respect for the family involved, it was a clear reminder of how crucial timely medical response is.
Bribie Island is a unique location that currently suffers from access limitations, particularly in emergencies. The single-lane bridge connecting us to the mainland exacerbates this issue by restricting swift access for emergency vehicles. Therefore, until a two-lane bridge is established in each direction, the island should be classified as a remote area, deserving of a continuous, round-the-clock ambulance service.
In situations where every minute counts, waiting for an ambulance to arrive from off-island can determine life or death outcomes. Statistics show that rapid response times significantly increase survival rates in medical emergencies, highlighting the urgent need for local resources to be immediately available.
By ensuring Bribie Island has 24/7 ambulance services, we are not just demanding convenience, but securing critical healthcare needs for all residents and visitors. Let's come together to advocate for change and raise awareness about this pressing issue.
We call upon Queensland Health and the local government to prioritize the safety of all persons on Bribie Island by making 24/7 ambulance service a reality.
I sent an email to our local member about this matter. I received acknowledgement from the office secretary that they have passed this on to the office of the Health minister Tim Nicolls, who looks after the ambulance service, I should hear something in 4 - 6 weeks.
