Ensure awareness and treatment for tongue tie and lip tie in newborns
The Issue
When my daughter was just 24 hours old, she was diagnosed with tongue tie. Despite this diagnosis, we were not offered any treatment options because I was not breastfeeding her. As a mum, I have faced countless challenges stemming from my daughter’s tongue tie and lip tie issues. As she approaches 11 months old, transitioning her to solid foods has become painfully difficult. She refuses to eat, forcing us back to bottle feeding, and upon her teething at 5 months, we discovered she also has lip tie. The strain and stress of watching my child struggle is immeasurable, and I feel every parent deserves better guidance and support in these situations.
Tongue tie (ankyloglossia) and lip tie are common conditions in newborns, yet they often go unaddressed unless the baby is being breastfed. This oversight can cause serious feeding difficulties, speech impediments, and dental issues as the child grows. According to the International Affiliation of Tongue-tie Professionals (IATP), around 5-11% of babies are born with tongue tie, making it a significant concern for many families.
To combat this, every parent of a newborn, whether formula-fed or breastfed, should be offered thorough education on tongue tie and lip tie during their baby’s first health check-ups. They should also receive equal access to treatment options, irrespective of the feeding method chosen. The refusal of treatment based on feeding choices should no longer be the norm.
Hospitals, midwives, and paediatricians must standardise checks for these conditions and provide parents with the information they need to make informed decisions. It’s crucial that all parents receive equal support and guidance so they can ensure the healthy development of their children.
Raise your voice in support of this cause so that no parent has to experience the heartbreak of watching their child struggle needlessly. Let’s change the standard and ensure all babies and their families have the support they deserve.
Please sign this petition to help make awareness and treatment of tongue tie and lip tie a standard practice for all newborns, regardless of feeding method. Together, we can help ensure a smoother start to life for every child.
