Ensure adequate shade over community playgrounds
Ensure adequate shade over community playgrounds
The Issue
Every parent and guardian wants the best for their children, and that includes safe and enjoyable play areas. But, in many community playgrounds, heat-related issues and prolonged sun exposure pose significant risks to our children's health. Take, for example, the community playground where I take my child. It lacks sufficient shade, with barely any tree cover or protective canopies over areas like swings, slides, and the wet zone. I have watched my own child retreat from the equipment, their skin red from the harsh sun, unable to fully enjoy what should be their time for boundless energy and fun.
The American Academy of Dermatology highlights that just a few serious sunburns can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. In addition, children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, which can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or even heatstroke. Should parents and caretakers need to choose between their child's health and playground enjoyment? It hardly seems fair.
Fortunately, solutions are both simple and feasible. Installing UV-protective shade structures over key areas like swings, slides, and wet zones can dramatically reduce these risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, providing shade can lower air temperatures by as much as 20 degrees, making play areas safer and more comfortable for children.
Moreover, introducing shade structures not only provides protection, it also extends the usability of playgrounds throughout the day. This enables children to play during the hotter hours without suffering from the harmful effects of the sun or heat, promoting daily physical activity and interaction with peers.
Please join me in urging local government and community planners to prioritize our children’s safety by ensuring our play areas are equipped with adequate shade. Let us come together as a community to voice the need for these essential changes. Our children deserve safe spaces to grow, play, and dream without health risks.
Sign the petition to make shaded playgrounds a reality for our community's children.
