Ensure Access to On-Campus Residences for Religious Use in Bloemfontein
Ensure Access to On-Campus Residences for Religious Use in Bloemfontein
The Issue
I am a citizen of South Africa, a democratic country where freedom of religion is not just a phrase but an inherent right. However, this right seems to be under threat in our educational institutions, specifically in the University of the Free State. Where leaders are banning students' desired religious activities on campus and in residences.
In our constitution, Section 15 states that everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion. Yet many students are unable to practice their faith freely.
According to Statistics South Africa (2016), approximately 79.8% of South Africans identify as religiously affiliated. This means that a significant number of students are potentially affected by this issue.
We believe it's important for educational institutions not only to respect but also facilitate the practice of different religions by providing suitable spaces within their premises. This will not only uphold constitutional rights but also promote diversity and inclusivity among students.
Therefore, we urge the relevant authorities in UFS to take immediate action and ensure access to on-campus residences for religious use. As the policies of the instution promote inclusivity and condemn any form of discrimination.
Please sign this petition if you believe in upholding our constitutional rights and promoting inclusivity within our campuses.
