Ensure access for carers of dementia patients in hospitals

Ensure access for carers of dementia patients in hospitals
The Issue
Our mother was admitted to St George’s Hospital in SW17. We were shocked and devastated when the hospital unlawfully denied us access to her. Our mother, who was diagnosed with dementia, faced neglect as she was left without hydration, nutrition, and bed sores. The pain and helplessness we felt were unimaginable, watching someone we love suffer, unable to do anything to help. This heartbreaking experience ultimately led to our mother’s untimely death.
This tragic event should never happen to any family. Dementia patients are some of the most vulnerable individuals in our healthcare system. They depend on the consistency, comfort, and care provided by familiar faces, especially during hospital stays. Denying carers or family members access to their loved ones in hospitals can have devastating consequences. It is crucial that hospitals recognize the essential role that carers and family members play in the care and well-being of dementia patients.
According to the Alzheimer's Society, it is estimated that over 850,000 individuals in the UK are living with dementia. Carers' involvement in hospital stays is vital, not only for the patients' emotional comfort but also for their physical well-being. Studies have shown that dementia patients without consistent care and support are at a higher risk of neglect, increased agitation, and deterioration of health.
We are calling on hospital administrators, healthcare policymakers, and the government to ensure that carers and family members are granted access to their loved ones in hospitals under all circumstances. This policy change is not only a matter of compassion but also one of human rights. It is about providing dignity, respect, and proper care to those who are unable to advocate for themselves.
Support this petition to demand that hospitals, including St George’s and others across the UK, uphold a policy of allowing carers and family members access to their loved ones at any time. Let us prevent any further suffering, neglect, and unnecessary loss. Sign this petition to protect dementia patients and their families.
