The Issue

Melbourne is no longer safe for our families!

Every day, parents fear sending their kids to school or letting them catch a train because youth under 18 are arming themselves with knives and machetes, turning public spaces into battlegrounds. This isn't just statistics; it's shattered lives and grieving families.

Recent tragedies have broken our hearts and ignited outrage across Victoria:

Aidan Becker, a 22-year-old off-duty security guard and true hero, was fatally stabbed with a machete at Mernda Railway Station in March 2026. He stepped in to protect a 14-year-old boy from an armed robbery by four teenagers, leading the boy to safety, only to be followed, beaten, and killed in a savage attack. Aidan was a peacemaker who wore a stab-proof vest from work, yet he couldn't survive the violence.

Dau Akueng (15) and Chol Achiek (12) were brutally stabbed to death with machetes in Cobblebank in September 2025 while walking home from basketball. Eight teenagers were charged with their murders in a case that shocked the community and highlighted the "hallmarks of youth gang crime."

Rhyan Singh (16) was ambushed and stabbed multiple times on his birthday in Tarneit in 2023 by machete-wielding youths, surviving but forever changed.

Declan Cutler (16) was stabbed to death in Coburg North in 2022, another innocent teen lost to senseless violence.

Over the last four years, at least 18 children have been murdered with blades in Victoria. Police seized a record more than 16,000 knives, machetes, and zombie knives in 2025–2026 alone, yet youth knife crime continues to surge, with gangs responsible for dozens of stabbings and repeat offenders walking free too easily. Communities are furious: "Enough is enough!" Parents, victims' families, and everyday Melburnians are demanding real protection now.

We call on Premier Jacinta Allan, Victoria Police, and the Parliament of Victoria to take immediate action:

✓Expanded Police Powers: Give officers greater authority for visible presence, surveillance, rapid arrests, and longer detention of offenders—especially juveniles under 18 involved in serious or repeat crimes (e.g., stricter bail conditions, warrantless searches for weapons in high-risk zones).

✓Increased Funding & Resources: Allocate urgent additional budget to:

Hire more police officers for enhanced patrols.

Provide more patrol vehicles and advanced equipment (cameras, tools for de-escalation and detection).

Boost resources to keep dangerous weapons off the streets.

✓Targeted High-Risk Locations: Prioritize intense policing and monitoring at railway stations across Melbourne (like Mernda), busy shopping centres, and the CBD—places where people commute daily and should never feel terrified.

This isn't just about punishment; it's about preventing the next tragedy, protecting our kids, and giving at-risk youth clear boundaries before it's too late. We've seen too much blood; we can't wait for more.
