As students, we have stepped forward to raise our voices in concern about the alarming rate of shootings in our schools. It is a haunting experience not to feel safe in the same environment where we are supposed to learn. In the wake of these events, we recognize and stress the need for an expansion of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Our request is specific: we call for an enhancement in the firearms checks applicable to all ages.

If we take a closer look at the data, it becomes apparent how grave the situation is. Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund's research suggests that there were at least 99 instances of gunfire on school grounds in 2019. This is an unfortunate trend that shows no sign of abating. Comprehensive firearms checks can play a pivotal role in mitigating this epidemic. According to the Giffords Law Center, states that require background checks for all handgun sales have 35% fewer gun deaths per capita than states without this requirement.

We believe that by expanding the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act to include more thorough firearms checks for all ages, we could make a significant step towards establishing safer schools and communities.
