Enhance seating rights for neurodivergent passengers

The Issue

As the mother of an autistic son, I have personally experienced the challenges and frustrations faced by neurodivergent individuals and their caregivers when it comes to air travel. For my son, like many others on the autism spectrum, unfamiliar environments, loud noises, and changes in routine can be overwhelming. Having a designated seating arrangement that accommodates the needs of neurodivergent passengers is not just a matter of convenience but a necessity for their comfort and well-being.

Neurodivergent individuals neve 24 hours care and safety and if they don't need this extreme care they often struggle in crowded and chaotic spaces, especially during boarding and deboarding processes. The stress of these situations can lead to sensory overload and anxiety, which can be further exacerbated when they are unable to sit with their caregivers. This can result in not only an unpleasant experience for the neurodivergent individual and their families but also for fellow passengers and airline staff who may not be equipped to handle such situations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States is identified as having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This statistic highlights just how many families are potentially affected by inadequate airline policies that fail to consider the unique needs of neurodivergent travelers. We need airlines to recognize and act on this issue to make air travel more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

I propose that airlines implement policies allowing neurodivergent passengers and their caregivers designated seating that keeps them together with not extra payment, like priority boarding, priority debording. This solution not only helps in reducing stress and anxiety but also ensures a smoother travel experience for all passengers. By doing so, airlines can set a benchmark for inclusivity and demonstrate their commitment to accommodating all travelers.

Please join me in urging airlines to enhance their policies regarding seating rights for neurodivergent passengers and their caregivers. With enough support, we can push for meaningful change that will greatly improve the travel experience for neurodivergent individuals and their families.
