Enhance School Bike Lanes in Huntington Beach, CA

Enhance School Bike Lanes in Huntington Beach, CA
The Issue
Make Huntington Beach Safe for Kids on Bikes! We want better bike lanes and safer crosswalks around the schools for Moffett, Hawes, Eader, Peterson, HCS, SSJ, Sowers and Edison.
Every day, children in Huntington Beach ride to school on streets that are not safe enough for them. Too many kids have been injured simply trying to get to class—a reality no parent should fear.
Our city has become a biking hub, especially with more kids and families using bikes and e-bikes to get around. But our streets haven’t kept up. The existing bike lanes around schools are narrow, unsafe, and insufficient for protecting our children. We need to adapt and become a bike friendly city.
In just three years, reported crashes in the city have more than doubled - from 72 in 2022 to 135 in 2023, and 147 in 2024. Current projections suggest 2025 will surpass. 120% increase since 2022.
According to data from CHOC, youth e-bike trauma cases have increased more than
1,500% since 2019. Huntington Beach currently leads Orange County in micromobility-
related trauma admissions involving riders under 18.
Since May 2023, HBPD has responded to more than 1,300 micromobility-related
nuisance calls, ranging from traffic violations to near-miss incidents. But even those
figures likely don’t capture the full scope of the issue.
We can change that. Wider, safer bike lanes give kids space to ride confidently. They reduce accidents, encourage healthy exercise, and cut down on traffic congestion. Cities with well-designed bike infrastructure see fewer collisions, happier families, and more kids biking to school safely.
Safety also means smarter streets. Crosswalks near schools need dedicated crossing guards and flashing lights to make them visible and secure. Simple upgrades like these save lives and give parents peace of mind.
Protected bike lanes reduce bike-related intersection injuries by about 75 percent
compared to comparable crossings without infrastructure.
This petition calls on Huntington Beach city planners and local government to prioritize safer bike lanes and enhanced safety features around schools (Moffett, Hawes, Peterson, Eader, HCS, SSJ, Sowers and Edison) Together, we can ensure that our children ride safely, our streets are vibrant and healthy, and Huntington Beach is known not just for its beaches, but as a city that cares for its youngest residents.
Sign today to protect our kids and help create a safer, more bike-friendly Huntington Beach.
