The Issue

As a mother of four, the safety of my children and that of every child in our Peculiar, Missouri community is my utmost priority. Every day, countless children walk or bike to schools located along School Road, risking their well-being on a route that lacks sufficient pedestrian safety measures. Our children deserve a safe journey to school, free from the looming threat of traffic accidents.

School Road, a crucial artery for residents, has become increasingly perilous. Despite its significance, it lacks proper crosswalks, traffic calming measures, and adequate signage. The absence of these essential safety features has contributed to numerous near misses and endangers not just school-aged children, but all residents who rely on walking or cycling as their means of transportation. Studies by the National Safety Council reveal that pedestrian safety improvements, such as crosswalks and speed humps, can reduce traffic-related injuries by up to 85%.

We urge the city council and local transportation authority to conduct a pedestrian safety evaluation and implement necessary improvements on School Road. These improvements could include the installation of well-marked crossing points, speed limit enforcement signs, speed bumps, and sidewalks. These measures are proven to curtail speeding and enhance pedestrian visibility, fundamentally transforming School Road into a safer environment for everyone.

Furthermore, with Peculiar's population growing steadily, the time is right for city officials to prioritize infrastructure that safeguards our community. Embracing these changes not only protects our children but also elevates the quality of life for all residents.

Join us in advocating for a safer route for our children by signing this petition. Together, we can emphasize the importance of pedestrian safety and push for necessary changes that will ensure the well-being of our community's most vulnerable members.

Thank you for providing an opportunity to respond to the petition regarding pedestrian and bicycle safety on School Road. The City of Peculiar recognizes the concerns raised by residents and is already in discussions with the parties involved, including the Raymore-Peculiar School District, regarding this important project. Because any improvements will require thoughtful planning and coordination, these conversations are an important step toward identifying practical and effective safety solutions. I appreciate seeing citizens become involved, express their concerns, and make their voices heard. Public participation helps city leaders better understand the needs of our growing community. I will continue to support open communication and work with the appropriate parties as these discussions move forward.
