Today, tragedy struck at Westwood Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia. On September 2nd, a shooting incident occurred that has left one victim wounded (as of 12:00 P.M. 9/02/2026). As a community, we are heartbroken. This could have been any one of our children, teachers, or school staff members. This incident highlights the urgent need for more effective security measures within our schools.

Waynesboro schools currently have some security protocols such as metal detectors, yet today's tragic event clearly demonstrates that these measures are not enough. It's important that we take immediate steps to ensure the safety of our children and educators. The presence of school resource officers (SROs) has been proven to deter crime and provide a crucial layer of security. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, effective deployment of SROs can reduce school violence by as much as 42%.

We call upon the Waynesboro School District and local authorities to prioritize the safety of students and staff. This petition advocates for the implementation of additional school resource officers across all schools in our district. Additionally, we urge for elevated security protocols, including the installation of advanced monitoring and emergency response systems.

The safety of our educational environment forms the foundation of success. We cannot allow fear to overshadow education. It is our duty to provide a safe, secure space for our children to learn and grow and for our teachers to educate without the potential threat to their safety.
