Enhance Safety at Our Daycare's Playground Access
The Issue
On September 10, 2025, a heart-wrenching tragedy struck a daycare in Richmond Hill (First Roots Early Education Academy), where a toddler was tragically killed and others were injured after a car crashed into the centre. The absence of proper barricades and protective measures between the parking lot and the daycare left children vulnerable, with devastating consequences. This horrific incident has sent shockwaves through our community and has made many parents reflect on the safety of our own children.
As parents, this issue is deeply personal, as it hits very close to home. Our own children attend daycare, and every day we trust that they will be safe, cared for, and protected.
However, knowing that our children at our daycare have to walk along an alleyway with active vehicle access to reach their playground is alarming.
This is not a reflection of the daycare staff, who have consistently shown dedication and care. Rather, this is a matter that requires action from the owners, the property management and our local government to make the necessary improvements.
Our daycare is a place we value and want to see thrive, and we believe our children deserve the highest standards of safety while in their care.
We are calling on the property managers, and city officials to step in and implement stronger safety measures. This should include installing barricades or bollards between the parking lot and the yellow-marked roadway that children must walk along to reach the playground. In addition, clear signage should be posted to slow down traffic and alert drivers that children are walking, along with any other protective measures that would ensure a safe path between the daycare and the playground.
By implementing these changes, we can ensure a safer environment that protects our children’s well-being and gives parents peace of mind.
We support our daycare wholeheartedly and want to raise awareness about this issue so that together we can create the safe space our children deserve.
