Urgent Action Needed: Improve Road Safety on Hunningley Lane Near Hunningley Primary School

Petition to Barnsley Council

I am a parent who walks to school every day with my children along Hunningley Lane, and I am genuinely afraid for our safety.

Cars regularly drive at excessive speed on this narrow and busy road. On 10.02.2026 early morning, at around 7am, yet another traffic incident occurred near Hunningley Primary School. Thankfully, it happened before the main school drop-off time. Had this taken place around 8:30am, when dozens of children and families are arriving, the consequences could have been catastrophic.

This is not an isolated incident — it is part of an ongoing and dangerous situation.

In addition to speeding vehicles, parking around the school has become a serious problem. Due to the lack of available parking, parents are forced to stop or park on pavements on both sides of the road. I do not blame parents for this — there is simply nowhere else to park. However, this leaves little or no space for pedestrians.

As a result, mothers with children and pushchairs are often forced to walk in the road alongside moving traffic because the pavement is blocked. This is extremely dangerous and creates a clear risk of serious accidents.

We urgently ask Barnsley Council to take this situation seriously and implement safety measures before someone is seriously hurt.

We respectfully request:

  1. Installation of speed bumps or other traffic calming measures on Hunningley Lane
  2. Consideration of traffic lights and a clearly marked pedestrian crossing near the school
  3. A full road safety assessment of the area
  4. Improved signage and road markings
  5. Practical solutions for safer parking around the school
  6. Consideration of creating a short-stay parking/drop-off area for parents
  7. Exploration of developing the grassy/muddy area near the school entrance into a safe parking space

How many more incidents must happen near our wonderful school before action is taken?

We are simply asking for common-sense measures to protect children and families.

Our children walk this road every day. Their safety must come first.
