Enhance Quadriplegic Care Standards in Arizona Nursing Homes

Enhance Quadriplegic Care Standards in Arizona Nursing Homes
The Issue
My brother was struck by a vehicle in March 2023, changing his life forever. As a result of the accident, he became a quadriplegic and now depends entirely on skilled nursing facilities for his care. Unfortunately, none of the six facilities he has been transferred to in Arizona has been able to provide the basic, yet essential, care that should be standard for someone in his condition. Due to his quadriplegia, my brother cannot feel when something is wrong. Instead, his body signals distress through changes in heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure—indicators suggesting that urgent medical attention is required. Shockingly, the staff at these nursing homes often dismiss these critical signs and incorrectly label them as 'normal' for his condition.
Quadriplegics have unique healthcare requirements, and their physiology differs significantly from the general population, particularly concerning baseline vital signs. This drastic oversight stems partly from the lack of education and training on quadriplegic care standards within these facilities. As families and loved ones, we trust these institutions to provide the necessary environments for our relatives to live with dignity and proper care. Yet, the existing system fails them repeatedly.
The state of Arizona needs to set a precedent to improve care for quadriplegic patients forced to reside in long-term nursing homes. This can be achieved by mandating specialized training programs for all medical staff working in these facilities, focusing on the distinct needs of quadriplegic patients. Additionally, implementing a regulatory framework that ensures adherence to established care standards will promote accountability and improve patient outcomes.
According to data from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, there are approximately 5.4 million Americans living with paralysis, including quadriplegics, many of whom rely on specialized care. Ignoring their unique needs can result in dire consequences and deteriorate their quality of life significantly. Arizona must rise to the occasion and provide a caregiving standard that reflects understanding, empathy, and professionalism.
Your signature can drive change. Encourage Arizona lawmakers and health care providers to prioritize and enhance quadriplegic care in nursing homes. Sign this petition to advocate for a compassionate and informed standard of practice that respects the dignity and health of all quadriplegic residents in our communities.
