Enhance pedestrian safety in Oakwood, Kalamazoo

Enhance pedestrian safety in Oakwood, Kalamazoo
The Issue
As a single, working parent and an avid recreational hiker and cyclist, I have cherished the opportunity to be a part of a walkable city that boasts both natural beauty and vibrant, locally owned business districts. However, as an Oakwood resident, I find myself constantly worried about the safety of my youngest child and myself as we attempt to walk and bike to Woods Lake Elementary and the Oakwood business district. The speed of drivers, the unprotected bike lane, and the lack of a northbound sidewalk on Oakland Avenue discourage us from enjoying the freedom of car-free movement.
Many families in Oakwood, just like mine, are eager to safely access the local amenities and enjoy outdoor activities without the fear of speeding cars and inadequate infrastructure. The current state of the streets does not support our community’s needs and puts our children and families at risk as they navigate to schools, parks, and shops.
This issue can be addressed by installing more traffic calming infrastructure in our neighborhood, constructing a northbound sidewalk along Oakland Avenue, and ensuring the existing No Turn on Red sign at the Parkview and Oakland intersection is activated. Traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or pedestrian islands, have been proven to significantly reduce vehicle speeds and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), effective traffic calming strategies create more livable and safer urban environments by encouraging slower driving speeds. Additionally, sidewalks provide safe passage for pedestrians, allowing families to comfortably and securely walk to their destinations.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for the enhancement of our neighborhood's safety and well-being. Let’s make Oakwood a safer, more pedestrian-friendly community for all residents. Join us in urging the City of Kalamazoo to prioritize these necessary improvements. Your support can lead to a better, safer Oakwood for everyone.
Please sign this petition to make a meaningful change for our community and ensure the safety of our children and families.
