Enhance mental health support in California Schools

Enhance mental health support in California Schools
The Issue
My children are in 8th and 11th grade and both have struggled with bullying, and the lack of mental health resources available in their schools. This concern isn't just personal – it's a nationwide crisis impacting countless students. Across the United States, students are facing mounting levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and social isolation. However, the resources available to address these mental health challenges in many schools remain woefully insufficient.
Our group, The Justice League of San Francisco State Univeristy, created this petition based off of our group project “The Connection between Isolation and School Violence” focusing on mental health, educating the educators and administration, supportive services and solutions for students across California schools. This was created in our Criminal Justice Studies Course “School Violence and Discipline”.
In schools, teachers and staff often serve as the first line of defense, the first adults to identify a student in distress. Yet, despite their crucial role, many of them are not equipped with the necessary training to effectively recognize mental health warning signs or respond appropriately. This leaves students vulnerable and without the support they desperately need.
Unfortunately, this gap in awareness and capability continues despite the presence of school counselors and psychologists who are already overstretched and, frequently, unable to provide adequate attention to each individual student. According to the American School Counselor Association, the recommended ratio of school counselors to students is 1:250, yet the current national average is approximately 1:482. This disparity demonstrates how overwhelmed our school mental health systems are.
The U.S. Department of Education must take immediate action to implement substantial reforms in our school systems. We propose mandatory mental health training for teachers and school staff, as well as increasing the number of school counselors and psychologists to meet the recommended standards.
We can no longer afford to ignore the cries for help from our children. Investing in mental health support and education in schools not only supports students' emotional and psychological well-being but also connects directly to their academic success and future potential.
Join us in calling for a commitment to improve mental health resources in schools for the well-being of our children and the future of our nation. Please sign this petition to drive change and make a lasting impact on the lives of millions of students across the country.
