Enhance Media Coverage for Public Participation in Constitution Reviews

Enhance Media Coverage for Public Participation in Constitution Reviews
The Issue
In our country, it is imperative that every citizen is informed about significant national events, including the opportunity to suggest changes to the constitution. Recently, South Africa opened its doors to public consultation on constitutional amendments. However, the national broadcaster has fallen short of its duty to effectively inform and engage the public.
Media coverage has been insufficient, leading to low levels of public participation. This lack of awareness and engagement is concerning because it excludes a portion of our population from having their voices heard, particularly those without access to social media platforms. The current situation highlights the pressing need for our public broadcaster to step up and ensure comprehensive coverage of this critical issue.
The decentralized nature of media access in South Africa means that the public broadcaster plays a vital role in disseminating information to all citizens, irrespective of their technological access or geographic location. Unfortunately, no public meetings have been organized to engage citizens who may not be digitally connected. It's crucial to host such community meetings to provide equal opportunities for participation and to ensure no voice is left unheard.
We urge the national broadcaster to increase its efforts in informing the wider public about their right and opportunity to contribute to the constitutional review process. This can be achieved by amplifying media campaigns, organizing public forums across various communities, and ensuring that every citizen is aware of how they can participate in shaping our nation's future.
Let's stand together to guarantee that every South African has a say in the constitutional changes. Sign this petition to demand better engagement and representation for all citizens in this essential democratic process and for the extension of the closing date of 31st May 2025
