Enhance equine emergency response in North Wales

Enhance equine emergency response in North Wales
The Issue
On 11th November 2025, my horse Llarna panicked after being loaded into our horsebox, reared up, and tragically got her leg trapped behind the side bar, which secures the dividers in place. The bar couldn't be removed, and we found ourselves in desperate need of specialist help. Llarna became increasingly distressed and ultimately fell off the ramp while still trapped, suffering catastrophic injuries. The devastating decision had to be made to put her to sleep.
This heartbreaking incident highlighted a severe gap in the availability of trained and equipped equine rescue teams in North Wales. In emergency situations involving horses, every second counts, yet the absence of specialized rescue resources can lead to irreversible tragedies. We need better emergency training and equipment for responders to ensure horse incidents are handled swiftly and effectively.
We are calling for a trained and equipped equine rescue team specifically for North Wales. Such teams should receive comprehensive training and equipment to handle equine emergencies efficiently, reducing the stress and risk of further injury to the horse involved.
Furthermore, it's crucial to establish a clear emergency protocol for horse owners. Knowing precisely what actions to take during an emergency can save lives. This protocol should be widely disseminated and accessible to all horse owners in the region.
Improved communication between veterinarians, welfare groups, and emergency services is another critical step. Creating a robust network among these groups ensures that all parties are informed and prepared to act in the best interest of equine welfare during crises.
By signing this petition, you are supporting the development of essential resources and systems that can prevent tragedies like Llarna's from happening again. Please join us in advocating for these necessary changes to protect our equine companions. Sign this petition to make North Wales a safer place for our horses.
