The Issue

Every single day, my 7-year-old son boards the school bus in the Rehobeth School District, and every single day, he faces bullying. No child should start or end their school day with fear or dread. This isn't just a problem isolated to Rehobeth School District; I've heard from numerous parents facing the same issue across Dothan City. School buses should be safe havens for our children, yet for many, they have become zones of harassment and intimidation.

Bullying on school buses is an epidemic that has reached alarming levels. Studies have shown that up to 33% of students report being bullied on the bus, leading to anxiety, depression, and a negative impact on their academic performance. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students who experience bullying are twice as likely to miss school due to fear.

It is clear that a change is necessary. We urgently need Rehobeth School District to implement and enforce a robust zero-tolerance policy for school bus bullying. This means clear guidelines for what constitutes bullying, a commitment to thorough investigations of all reported incidents, and accountability measures for offenders and negligent staff.

The district should also invest in training sessions for bus drivers and monitors, equipping them with the tools to recognize, address, and de-escalate bullying situations effectively. Implementing anti-bullying workshops and education programs for staff and students can develop empathy and understanding about the harmful impacts of bullying, promoting a culture of kindness and respect.

Let's work together to create a safe and supportive environment for our children. By implementing these changes, we can ensure that school buses in Rehobeth and Dothan City become the safe spaces they should be. Sign this petition to demand immediate action and show our children that we stand with them in creating a bully-free environment.
