The Issue

As an animal lover, the issue of debarking or devocalization of dogs is deeply personal to me. Learning about the suffering this procedure causes for dogs made it impossible for me to remain silent. I believe it's important to address how cruel such practices are and it's time we call for nationwide laws prohibiting devocalization treatments on dogs.

Debarking consists of surgical procedures that are not only unethical, but also immensely damaging to the health and wellbeing of a dog. They can lead to severe complications like bleeding, infection, swelling, and pain. Moreover, the procedure can cause scar tissue to form in the larynx, narrowing the throat and making it difficult for the dog to breathe. Dogs subjected to debarking struggle with chronic coughing, gagging, and risk aspiration pneumonia, a potentially deadly condition.

Beyond the physical health concerns, debarking infringes on a dog's ability to communicate. This lack of communication capacity can lead to frustration in dogs, often driving them towards destructive behaviors.

Every state in the U.S. recognizes animal cruelty as a federal offense. This supports a solid basis for us to categorize debarking as cruelty and for its prohibition in all 50 states, aligning with our existing legal framework against animal abuse.

It's time we apply our knowledge of these harmful implications to enforce a prohibition of such cruel practices and to promote the humane treatment of dogs. Let's raise our voices against debarking and prevent this unnecessary suffering imposed on our loving companions. Please sign the petition – let's protect our furry friends' right to communicate!
