The Issue

Each year, we, citizens of Monroe, Louisiana, are faced with a scene that is both shocking and intimidating - Confederate soldiers firing guns and cannon during the annual Janus Mardi Gras Parade.

Monroe City Ordinance (Sec. 12-203) clearly states that "It shall be unlawful to draw, display, present or exhibit with the intention of committing any crime or intimidating any person, any pistol, bowie knife, gun or any other dangerous weapon, within the corporate limits of the city." This ordinance comes into direct conflict with the firing of weapons at the parade.

Confederate soldiers firing off guns and cannon through our city streets during a celebration meant for grandeur and joy undermines the spirit of safety and celebration that the Mardi Gras Parade stands for, and it is clear that the enforcement of Monroe City Ordinance Sec. 12-203 can put an end to this.

Our city law already prevents this display, but it needs enforcement. We are asking the City of Monroe to put an end to this situation and enforce this ordinance as per its intended purpose.

Let's reclaim our city streets for joyous celebration without the intimidation of firearms. Stand with us to ensure a safer, more enjoyable Mardi Gras Parade. Please sign this petition to request the City to enforce their ordinance and prevent the display of firearms during the Janus Mardi Gras Parade.
