Enforce the Lead Tackle Ban to Protect Massachusetts Loons

The Issue

Lead tackle has been banned in Massachusetts inland waters for more than 14 years. Yet violations continue, and the result is deadly.

Lead poisoning is the leading cause of adult loon deaths in New England. These birds often ingest lead sinkers and jigs, mistaking them for stones or accidentally swallowing them while eating bait. With only 56 breeding pairs of loons left in Massachusetts, every loss puts the species at greater risk.

Despite clear regulations, the Massachusetts Environmental Police continue to find illegal lead tackle on lakes across the state, especially in areas frequented by loons. Awareness is not enough. We need stronger enforcement to protect our wildlife.

We are calling on the Massachusetts Environmental Police and the Department of Fish and Game to:

  • Increase patrols and active enforcement of the lead tackle ban, especially during ice fishing season
  • Issue more citations and visible penalties for violations to deter future harm
  • Launch targeted public education efforts at popular fishing sites and bait shops
  • Work with conservation groups to protect breeding loon habitats from further contamination

This law exists for a reason, and enforcement should reflect its urgency. Loons are not just beautiful birds. They are indicators of a healthy ecosystem, and they depend on clean, safe lakes to survive.

Sign this petition if you believe Massachusetts must enforce the lead tackle ban to protect loons and preserve the health of our lakes.
