Enforce Tenant Accountability in Ireland

The Issue

Being a landlord in Ireland today is fraught with challenges. We continuously face issues like rent arrears, damage to property, and the ensuing legal costs that come with attempting to rectify these situations. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) process, while essential for mediating disputes, often leans in favor of tenants, leaving landlords to shoulder substantial losses without much recourse. This not only inflicts financial strain on individual landlords but also discourages them from staying in the rental market.

Tenants, under current regulations, often evade accountability for damages and unpaid dues. This laxity in tenant laws allows them to move on freely after causing considerable harm to properties, resulting in landlords footing the bill. The financial burden of property repairs and unpaid rents can be overwhelming, prompting many landlords to withdraw from the rental market altogether, exacerbating the housing crisis.

Ireland needs a balanced approach that protects the rights of landlords alongside those of tenants. Legal reforms should focus on making tenants fiscally responsible for their actions, ensuring that they cover all incurred dues and damages. Implementing stricter penalties for rent arrears and property damage will foster a sense of accountability among tenants, ultimately leading to a fairer rental market.

We urge the government to review the tenant laws to create a system where both parties are equally accountable. It is critical to establish a fair and efficient mechanism for conflict resolution that does not disproportionately penalize landlords. Addressing these issues will encourage landlords to remain in the market, providing more stable rental opportunities for everyone.

Sign this petition to support the call for a fairer rental system in Ireland that protects landlords from undue losses and makes tenants responsible for their obligations.
