Enforce stricter policies on protests that impact businesses and promote hate-speech

The issue

I am an Australian citizen deeply concerned about the repeated protests that are negatively affecting our businesses, causing vandalism, road closures, and spreading hate. Furthermore, these protests have entered into child and family friendly areas and expose young children to inappropriate content. I fear that these protests have now lost their true purpose and are merely being utilised as a vehicle for barbaric behaviour.

Our local businesses have reported significant losses due to these disruptions. Last Sunday, I witnessed tens of protestors in Melbourne stand outside businesses and chanting to "Boycott" said business, banging on windows, and harassing customers. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, small businesses account for 35% of Australia's gross domestic profit and employ 44% of Australia's workforce. When these businesses suffer, it affects our economy as a whole.

Moreover, these protests often lead to vandalism, including the use of foul language, antisemitic imagery, and graphic and gruesome images. Vandalism is costing taxpayers millions each year in repairs. Moreover, children and families are being exposed to horrific material. I firmly believe that there are more respectful ways to communicate your message without traumatising Australian children.

The recent rallies have also lead to road closures, significant changes in public transport, and Australian port closures, which disrupt daily life for many citizens, and disrupt businesses. The Australian Automobile Association reports that traffic congestion costs Australians $16.5 billion annually; this figure is expected to rise if such disruptions continue unchecked.

Most concerning is the spread of hate speech during these events , particularly antisemitic rhetoric.  Last Sunday when I was passing by, protestors yelled at me "Go home you Zionist pig" and "Hamas will finish you off". I am just one of many who have experienced hate-speech, and I fear for the future of our nation as this horrific hate-speech is beginning to become normalised in our society. It not just intimidates other civilians, but it has the potential to turn violent or even deadly, as we have seen a number of violent bashings targeting specific communities. This goes against our values as a nation built on multiculturalism and mutual respect.

We urge lawmakers to regulate such repeated protests in order to protect our economy, public property, prevent extremist radicalisation, preserve societal harmony and most importantly the innocence of our children from being exposed prematurely to adult themes they aren't ready for yet.

Please sign this petition if you believe in creating safer spaces within our communities while preserving everyone's right to peaceful protest.
