The Issue

My husband was attacked, knocked flat on his back, twice, bitten, and our puppy was killed by a vicious dog that was allowed to run freely in our Southside neighborhood on May 9,2025. This tragic incident was a wake-up call about a long-standing issue in our community—irresponsible pet ownership and the lack of enforcement of leash laws. We've endured fear and anxiety every time we step outside our homes, unsure if another roaming animal will cause harm. This is not okay and must stop!

The streets of Southside, AL should be safe for everyone—children playing outside, families walking with their pets, elderly citizens enjoying a stroll. Unfortunately, the reality has been far from that. Incidents like the one my family and I have faced are far too common. Dogs running unleashed constitute a significant threat to community safety. They not only endanger human lives but also pose a risk to other animals, leading to potential attacks and fatal encounters.

Currently, the fines and penalties imposed on negligent pet owners are insufficient to mitigate this issue. It is imperative that the City Council of Southside introduces stricter ordinances with higher fines and stronger consequences for those who fail to control their pets. Implementing harsher penalties will serve as a deterrent and ensure that pet owners are more responsible guardians of their animals.

Stricter laws should include increased fines escalating with repeated offenses, mandatory educational programs for owners, and, if necessary, community service or pet behavior management courses. Additionally, increased patrols by animal control officers should be considered to monitor and enforce these regulations effectively.

This issue demands immediate action. Every resident deserves the right to feel safe in their neighborhood without fear of dog attacks. We can’t afford to wait for another tragedy to act.

Join me in advocating for change. Sign this petition to urge our city officials to enact more stringent penalties and enforce existing laws with greater vigor. Let's work together to create a safer Southside, AL for everyone.
