Enforce Stricter Emissions Regulations and Penalties to Protect Dallas Communities

The Issue

Dallas has over the years prioritized economic and industrial growth over environmental health, leading to severe air pollution issues that threaten public health and harm low-income and minority communities. The rise in industrial activities has caused an increase in pollutants like PM2.5 and toxic chemicals, contributing to respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD, and even cancer.

Areas like West Dallas, where the GAF plant is placed, experience pollution levels that are well above the safety limits. These pollutants not only harm the environment but create problems for the nearby residents, who for example have faced asthma five times higher than in other parts of Dallas.

The petition is created to urge the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)) to implement and enforce stricter regulations regarding emissions. This includes requiring better filtration systems for factories imposing heavy fines on factories and buildings that exceed pollution limits and establishing zoning laws that would keep factories from residential communities to protect and safeguard residencies.

Having clean air should be a right, and these measures would protect Dallas residents' health. Having support on these issues could help force leaders to prioritize air quality, and set an example for other cities in Texas, or even the nation.
