As a long-time resident of North Haven and a mother to two young children, I am deeply concerned about the growing disregard for speed limits and traffic laws in our community. Our streets should be a secure place for all residents – whether they are drivers, pedestrians, or those enjoying outdoor activities, like our children playing or our friends walking their dogs.

Unfortunately, the observance of traffic laws in North Haven has been increasingly neglected, leading to a dangerous rise in speeding incidents. Local governmental bodies made promises to address the issue, yet the problem persists. The safety measures currently in place are consistently overlooked resulting in our neighborhoods no longer being safe spaces for our children, our pets, and ourselves.

A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed as compared to a vehicle travelling just 10 mph faster. This data underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgency to act.

This is not just about law enforcement; it's about quality of life, peace of mind, and safety for our families. We have a right to feel secure in our neighborhood, and to trust that our children and pets can play safely.
