Enforce Smoke-Free Housing in Little Rock, AR

The Issue

I live in Little Rock, AR, and I have multiple health challenges, including respiratory issues, high blood pressure, heart problems, and diabetes. My doctor has sternly advised me to avoid exposure to secondhand smoke. Despite my repeated complaints to my apartment's management and even reaching out to State Representative and Legal Aid, I have seen little to no action. This lack of response is distressing and dangerous, as Arkansas remains one of the few states without comprehensive renter protections against secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke doesn't just affect individuals like me; it affects families, children, and all residents in our communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), secondhand smoke contributes to over 41,000 deaths among nonsmoking adults in the United States each year. It is a proven cause of respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in children. Furthermore, it can aggravate existing health conditions, leading to serious, sometimes fatal, outcomes for people with chronic illnesses.

Our state lawmakers have been negligent in instituting laws that protect tenants from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. This negligence prioritizes the profits of landlords over the health and safety of Arkansas residents. It's time we demand change.

I propose that all apartments in Little Rock be required by law to enforce strict no-smoking policies. Buildings that fail to comply with these regulations should face significant fines. Furthermore, property owners and landlords must be held liable for any harm caused to tenants by secondhand smoke. Implementing these measures will safeguard the well-being of all residents and create a healthier living environment for all.

Let's urge our local government to take swift and decisive action. By signing this petition, you stand in support of healthier, smoke-free housing initiatives that prioritize the wellbeing of Little Rock's tenants over landlord profit. Together, we can put pressure on lawmakers to rectify this oversight and protect our community from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Please sign this petition to show your support and demand that our leaders hold landlords accountable for ensuring safe and healthy living conditions for everyone in Little Rock, AR.
