The Issue

On Preston Road near The Secret Garden café in Wigan, a tragic accident recently claimed the life of a gentleman who was struck by a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV). This heartbreaking event has highlighted the pressing need for heightened pedestrian safety measures in the area.

We urge Wigan Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to conduct an immediate assessment of this road. Our primary request is to install a pelican crossing, which we believe will provide a controlled and safe crossing point for pedestrians. If a pelican crossing is not feasible, we propose the creation of a refuge island by narrowing the footpath on the café side, thereby widening the road to safely accommodate a crossing.

Moreover, we advocate for implementing a 20 mph speed limit on the stretch of road from Avondale Street to the traffic lights. Additional safety measures, such as installing railings along this route, would further protect pedestrians from potential future accidents.

These changes are crucial to safeguarding the lives of residents and visitors alike, preventing further tragedies, and ensuring that Preston Road remains a safe environment for all. Please add your voice by signing this petition to demand necessary safety improvements and protect our community. Together, we can make a significant difference and save lives.
