The Issue

I am a parent devastated by the actions of my son's father who is hindering our much-needed reconnection. This is a struggle shared by many in our society, with countless parents and children suffering from the consequences of unnecessarily prolonged parent-child estrangement.

Family courts today have the power to mandate make-up visitation or order therapeutic reunification counseling to restore contact between parents and their children. The court can also impose consequences on uncooperative parents. However, the enforcement of these provisions often falls short.

Many of us live with the unsettling reality that our rightful relationship with our children is being prevented. This lack of enforcement by the court system only exacerbates our torment. Without the court's intervention, the division widens, and the child's emotional well-being is jeopardized. National statistics show that children benefit from maintained relationships with both parents post-separation – yet, our courts are not enforcing this reality.

Moreover, if obstruction continues, parents should be able to seek joint custody or even a change in custody. Unfortunately, for many of us, navigating this process alone is daunting, complex, and slow.

It is time that our courts firmly enforce reunification and uphold the right for parents to file for custody modification when unjustly barred from their children. It is time for swift, equitable justice for all parents, for the sake of our children. We implore you to sign this petition and bring awareness to this glaring issue. Help us ask family courts to serve the best interests of our children and enforce reunification.
