Enforce prohibition of cannabis in recreational parks

Enforce prohibition of cannabis in recreational parks
The Issue
Recently, during a peaceful drive to our local park, I witnessed a distressing scene. A raccoon, bewildered and seemingly intoxicated by cannabis, was wandering aimlessly. Indeed the raccopn was attracted to the Cannabis odor, potentially thinking it was a food source. Instead of offering help or alerting authorities, the Cannabis users decided to throw stones at the poor creature. This unsettling experience highlighted a growing problem in our recreational parks where wildlife and families alike seek respite and fresh air. The consumption of Cannabis in public area including in parks and recreational areas is illegal in California- set by California State Law as well Federal Law.
Cannabis and other illicit drugs used in parks and recreational areas have harmful consequences not just for wildlife, such as the raccoon I encountered, but also pose serious risks to our children and other park visitors as well to our pets. Parks are meant to be sanctuaries where people can enjoy nature, engage in physical activities, and relish time away from urban life's hustle. However, the presence of drugs shatters the serenity and safety we expect in these cherished spaces.
Wildlife like raccoons, squirrels, and birds often interact with discarded drug paraphernalia or inhale smoke from cannabis, causing health issues and distress. Innocent animals should not bear the consequences of human actions. Moreover, our parks, frequented by families, children, and the elderly, should be free from the influence and presence of drugs as it written by California Law.
By reinforcing the prohibition of cannabis and other illicit drugs in these public areas, we can ensure that parks remain the safe havens they are meant to be. Effective enforcement can be achieved by increasing park patrols, deploying effective signage about the rules, reporting drug activity immediately to Law enforcement and exert strict fines for violations as requested by the State of California.
The time has come to take a stand for our parks, wildlife, and community. Let's urge local authorities and park officials to strengthen enforcement measures and preserve the natural beauty and safety of our recreational areas. Your support and voice are crucial in this endeavor.
Please sign this petition to eliminate drug use in parks in Burlingame as requested by the State of California and protect both wildlife, visitors, their children and their pets.
