Enforce Indecent Exposure Laws Year-Round in Toronto

Enforce Indecent Exposure Laws Year-Round in Toronto
The Issue
Indecent exposure is a criminal offense under the Criminal Code of Canada, yet in Toronto, this law is not being enforced consistently, particularly during Pride Month when an annual naked bike ride also takes place. As proud residents of Toronto, we recognize the importance of ensuring our city is welcoming, safe, and respectful for everyone, including families and the LGBTQ+ community.
During Pride Month, Toronto transforms into a vibrant celebration of diversity, acceptance, and equality. However, this does not mean that the law should take a backseat. Some members of the community encourage parents to bring their children to the pride parade, only to find dozens of men exposing their genitals, which is an illegal act. The Toronto Police Department has been surprisingly lenient during these times. This leniency not only undermines family-friendly public enjoyment but also detracts from the dignified celebration of Pride itself and brings the community into disrepute. The lawlessness that has become common at Pride events is one reason so many corporate sponsors have withdrawn their support. This proposal may solve that problem.
It is vital for the Toronto Police Department to uphold their duty year-round by enforcing laws against indecent exposure uniformly. By doing so, they ensure public spaces remain safe and comfortable for everyone, safeguarding the inclusive spirit of Pride Month. Consistent law enforcement reflects a commitment to a balanced approach where freedom of expression is celebrated, while community standards are respected.
We call upon the Toronto Police and Mayor's Office to take action in addressing this oversight by notifying Pride Toronto and the Naked Bike Ride organizations that indecent exposure will no longer be tolerated. This announcement should be made prior to the Pride parade this year. Participants should be notified in advance that if they expose their genitals in public they will be subject to arrest and prosecution for this sex crime, and that the offence is considered much more serious if children are present.
Let us ensure that Toronto remains a positive and welcoming environment for all residents and visitors alike. Sign this petition to urge the Toronto Police to enforce indecent exposure laws diligently, every day of the year, and especially during our beloved Pride Month, for the benefit of families, the LGBTQ+ community, and the city as a whole.
