Enforce Fair Overtime Pay for Hospitality Workers

Enforce Fair Overtime Pay for Hospitality Workers

The Issue

Having witnessed firsthand the demanding hours and lack of compensation in the hospitality industry, it’s time we take a stand. For years, I worked tirelessly in kitchens, from a Kitchen Porter to a Head Chef, compelled to stay long past my contracted hours without any overtime pay or recognition. It was expected. But when those extra hours began to accumulate—sometimes exceeding 70 hours a week on a contract meant for 40—there was no extra pay to show for it. Instead, my last employer attempted to terminate my contract during a period of illness, citing my inability to manage these unreasonable hours.

This exploitative practice is widespread in the hospitality industry, affecting countless employees just like me. In the UK, 1 in 5 hospitality workers report excessive work hours without appropriate compensation. When the workload spikes in busy seasons, employers frequently require staff to "just deal with it," resulting in exhaustion, burnout, and even physical illness, as in my case.

It’s imperative that we advocate for a new law mandating fair compensation for overtime work in hospitality. Such legislation should ensure that all hours worked beyond the agreed contract are paid at an overtime rate, reinforcing a standard of respect and fairness for employees. This change will not only protect the health and well-being of workers but also foster a more sustainable work environment.

Sign this petition to urge our lawmakers to create and enforce legislation that safeguards hospitality workers from unpaid overtime. Together, we can demand justice and fairness in the workplace, ensuring that our hard work is duly recognized and rewarded. Please join me in signing this petition to protect the rights of every hospitality worker.
