Enforce Equal Accountability for Law Enforcement

The Issue

So many people have fallen victim to those who wield their power irresponsibly, hiding behind a badge while forgetting their duty to truly serve their community and care for human lives. This issue hits close to home for me because I have witnessed countless families suffering emotional, mental, and physical harm at the hands of officers who seem to consider themselves above the law. The privilege of being a police officer should not come with the ability to act without consequence. It's high time for change.

We must ask ourselves why, when their lives are not in danger, do police officers still resort to pulling out weapons? This is a critical question. It seems there's a paradigm that permits officers to act excessively while civilians are denied the same privilege to defend themselves, whether in the streets or in courts. This imbalance of power is unjust, and it’s time to address it.

Consider this: if a civilian can only defend themselves when in genuine danger, shouldn't the same standard apply to those entrusted to enforce the law? The badge should not be a shield for misconduct or an excuse for unjustified use of force. Accountability should be equally applicable to everyone, regardless of their position.

According to a report by Mapping Police Violence, over 1,000 people were killed by police in the United States in 2020 alone, with many cases where life-threatening situations were nonexistent. This rising number is alarming and demands immediate action.

Our proposal is to reform the legal and training protocols of police departments to establish fair standards of engagement in situations where force is considered. We demand a systematic review of police activities to ensure they are adhering to the same rigorous standards expected of every citizen: to use force only when absolutely necessary.

Join us in demanding justice for those who have been unjustly harmed by an imbalanced system. Together, we can amplify our voices to insist that laws apply equally to everyone, regardless of whether or not they wear a uniform. Sign this petition to demand equal accountability for law enforcement officials.
