On Friday, September 18, 2026, a 15-year-old girl was tragically killed while riding a Citi Bike in New York City. Her life was cut short, highlighting the dire need for increased safety protocols and regulations, particularly for young riders accessing Citi Bikes.

With New York City's dense traffic, it is crucial that we protect our teenagers from these dangers. Teenagers, eager to explore their independence, are currently able to unlock these bikes with ease, despite the known risks associated with riding in such an environment.

We urge the New York City government and Citi Bike to implement mandatory ID-based age verification for all Citi Bike accounts. This will help ensure that no individual under the age of 18 can unlock a Citi Bike electric bike. We also demand immediate suspension of any accounts that are used to facilitate access for underage riders. We also ask the city to enforce a helmet law for all riders under age 18. By requiring these measures, we believe that we can prevent future tragedies like the one that occurred in our community.  

Additionally, we call on Citi Bike to invest in the safety of our children by funding free bicycle safety classes for students across New York City. These classes would instill essential safety practices and equip young riders with the knowledge needed to navigate our streets responsibly and safely.

The death of any child is one too many. We cannot stand by and let another family suffer such profound grief without taking action. This petition is a call to action to protect our young people and ensure safer city streets for everyone.
