The Issue

I can’t cope with what’s happening to our country. Every election cycle, we place our trust in leaders hoping they will fulfill the policy promises they make. Unfortunately, too often, we see prime ministers claim one thing to get into power, and then execute the complete opposite once they are secure in their position. This breach of trust is heartbreaking and damaging to the very fabric of our democracy.

An unbreakable bond of trust should exist between the electorate and their elected officials. To preserve this trust, there must be consequences for policymakers who gain office through deceitful promises. Therefore, we call for a law that immediately removes any prime minister from office who significantly alters their policy agendas from what was communicated during their campaign, calling for an immediate general election.

This new legal standard would ensure that elected leaders remain true to their promises and hold them accountable to the people who placed their faith in them. Such measures would deter future leaders from engaging in misleading campaign tactics, thereby restoring confidence in our electoral process and public institutions.

Statistically, political experts and analysts have found a widening trust gap between the government and its citizens. Recent polling shows trust in the UK government is at a record low, with the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) British Social Attitudes (BSA) Survey finding in 2024 that only 12% of people trust governments. If we do not implement measures like this proposed legislation, we risk further erosion of public confidence.

The journey towards this change begins with awareness and support. Encourage your friends, family, and community to stand up for a future where politicians are truly accountable. Sign this petition to demand honest governance and protect our democracy against opportunistic politics.
