Ending unjust visitation Restrictions for inmates and their family members

Ending unjust visitation Restrictions for inmates and their family members
The Issue
Many of us know the heartache of having a loved one in prison. For some of us, that pain is compounded by restrictions preventing us from seeing them—simply because of our own criminal histories or pending charges. This policy isn’t just unjust; it’s harmful. It’s time to change it.
I’m one of countless families in Washington State facing this challenge. My husband is incarcerated at Walla Walla State Penitentiary. For over two and a half years, I was barred from visiting him because of pending felony charges against me. When those charges were dismissed, I finally had the chance to see him. My husband and I should not have had to wait for visits to be allowed because I had non violent felony charges pending. And the sad part about it all is that those charges were dismissed and I lost out on 2.5 years with him for nothing.
We are more than our past mistakes. We are parents, spouses, siblings, and children who are trying to rebuild connections with the ones we love. Families like mine are not just fighting for visitation; we’re fighting for support systems that give our loved ones a better chance at rehabilitation.
The current visitation policy punishes families and undermines rehabilitation. Research confirms that family connections play a vital role in reducing recidivism. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, incarcerated individuals who maintain family ties during their sentence are less likely to reoffend after release. Denying these connections isn’t just unfair to families—it’s a detriment to public safety and the goal of rehabilitation.
This petition calls on the Washington State Department of Corrections to amend this policy. Let’s prioritize compassion and rehabilitation over punishment. Let’s foster connections that improve lives and strengthen our communities.
By signing this petition, you’re taking a stand for justice, humanity, and the belief that every family deserves the chance to heal and grow stronger. Your signature can help make this critical change happen.
